As the nation marks Youm-e-Takbeer, commemorating Pakistan’s emergence as a nuclear power on May 28, 1998, the country is also celebrating the peaceful applications of nuclear technology in key sectors such as health, energy, and agriculture.
This day, while honoring a historic strategic achievement, serves as a reminder of Pakistan’s commitment to using nuclear science for public welfare and national development.
At the forefront of these efforts is the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC). Over the years, PAEC has played a pivotal role in expanding the peaceful benefits of nuclear technology.
It operates a network of 20 cancer hospitals across the country, providing advanced diagnostic and treatment services.
Facilities like the NORI Cancer Hospital in Islamabad offer Cyber Knife technology, a highly precise, non-invasive robotic radiosurgery option. Currently, around 80% of Pakistan’s cancer patients benefit from PAEC-run hospitals—a significant contribution to national healthcare.
In the energy sector, six nuclear power plants are providing clean, low-cost, and sustainable electricity to the national grid.
The Chashma Nuclear Power Plant Unit-1 (C-1) recently completed a remarkable 400-day continuous operation, setting a national record.
The upcoming Chashma Unit-5 (C-5), expected to add 1,200 MW to the national grid, will be Pakistan’s largest nuclear power unit upon completion.
Nuclear technology is also transforming agriculture and biotechnology in Pakistan. Institutes affiliated with PAEC have developed disease-resistant and high-yield crop varieties, boosting food security and farmer productivity.
The Nuclear Institute for Agriculture and Biology (NIAB) in Faisalabad is pioneering coloured cotton varieties, offering eco-friendly alternatives to traditional textile production.
NIAB has also been recognized as an IAEA Collaborating Centre for advanced agricultural research.
As Pakistan celebrates Youm-e-Takbeer 2025, the nation reiterates its resolve to use nuclear technology for peace, prosperity, and sustainable development.
PAEC’s contributions stand as a testament to how nuclear advancements can improve lives and uplift entire communities.
