In a significant development, an ex-Bangladeshi senior military officer, Major General (retd) ALM Fazlur Rahman, has suggested Bangladesh seek China’s assistance in seizing India’s northeast state if in case of Indian attack on Pakistan.

Following rising tensions between India and Pakistan over the Pahalgam incident, India has lost its credibility by threatening Pakistan and blaming its neighbour without an iota of evidence.

Indian media and social media accounts have gone into a war frenzy, fantasising and calling for attacks in Pakistan.

Pakistan, on the other hand, has acted responsibly by offering to conduct an impartial and transparent investigation into the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir attack on April 22.

Amidst the warmongering by India, a social media post by an ex-army officer of the Bangladesh military has scared the Indian government.

His post suggested Bangladesh should consider occupying India’s northeastern states if India were to launch a military strike on Pakistan. He argued that the landlocked nature of India’s northeastern “seven sisters” presented a strategic opportunity for Bangladesh in the event of conflict.

The ex-general currently serves as chairman of the National Independent Commission and was appointed under the interim government led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus.

It merits a mention that Rahman’s statement follows an earlier controversial remarks given by Chief Adviser and Nobel laureate Yunus during a visit to China, in which he reportedly remarked that Bangladesh was the “only guardian of the Indian Ocean” and invited Chinese investment and cooperation.

Yunus’s remarks were a hint at the regional bully which India has become and a significant shift from Bangladesh’s foreign policy after the people threw out Sheikh Hasina’s autocratic government.

Relations between India and Bangladesh have soured significantly because India continues to meddle in the internal affairs of Bangladesh, even offering asylum to the autocrat Sheikh Hasina.
