Europe experienced its hottest March ever, with temperatures far above normal, according to the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service.

The record-breaking heat also triggered extreme rainfall across the continent.

It wasn’t just Europe—March 2025 was the second-hottest March globally, continuing a trend of unusually high temperatures since July 2023. Scientists say nearly every month since then has been at least 1.5°C warmer than before the industrial era.

March was 1.6°C hotter than pre-industrial levels, making it the hottest March in Europe by a significant margin. Experts expected temperatures to cool after the El Niño weather pattern faded earlier this year, but the heat has persisted.

Scientists warn that even small increases in global temperature raise the risk of extreme weather. The hottest March ever is another sign of how climate change is heating the planet and disturbing weather patterns.
