The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will meet on May 27, Tuesday, for Zilhaj moon sighting and it will be decided whether Eid ul Adha 2025 will be on June 6, Friday, or June 7, Saturday.

Chairman Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad will preside over the meeting. Apart from the central meeting, zonal meetings will also take place in different cities of Pakistan including Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad and Peshawar.

According to Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), the chances of Zil Hajj moon sighting on May 27 are low, which means there are very few chances of Eid ul Adha falling on June 6. If the SUPARCO prediction is right, Eid ul Adha will be celebrated on June 7.

The final announcement regarding Eid ul Adha will be made by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee.

Eid ul Adha 2025 holidays in Pakistan

According to the Cabinet Division circular for 2025 public holidays in Pakistan, the Eid ul Adha holidays will be from June 7 to June 9, Saturday to Monday. However, these holiday dates are not confirmed until the moon sighting.

The government will announce the holidays after the moon sighting.

The Eid holidays are important for people working in private and public offices but not for students, because during this time most schools, colleges, and universities have already given summer holidays.

Why is Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee important?

During Fawad Chaudhry’s tenure as the Federal Minister for Science and Technology, he adopted a science-based and contemporary method of moon sighting. He implemented an astronomy-based moon sighting calendar to decrease reliance on conventional visual observations. He also initiated a mobile application named “Ruet” that indicated the location of the moon and forecast Islamic dates ahead of time.

It triggered a national controversy, as religious thinkers and the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee criticised the use of technology alone for such religious affairs.
The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee is responsible for maintaining national harmony by officially certifying moon sightings within Pakistan. Being the government’s official body, it authenticates reports through religious principles as well as scientific information. This avoids contradictory Eid announcements between districts or sects, keeping the nation uniform. By gathering and cross-verifying evidence from different regions of the country, the committee builds credibility and transparency in its decisions, thus becoming a reliable authority for marking significant Islamic dates.
