WEBDESK: Gaming giant Electronic Arts (EA) has cancelled its upcoming Black Panther video game and shut down the studio behind it, Cliffhanger Games. The decision was confirmed through an internal email sent to staff by EA Entertainment and Technology President, Laura Miele.
The Black Panther game was meant to be a big single-player experience, rich in story and action. It had generated buzz among Marvel fans and gamers alike when it was first announced. Cliffhanger Games was specially formed in 2023 to bring the Black Panther universe to life through a deep and immersive gaming experience.
The cancellation was announced internally via an email from Laura Miele, president of EA Entertainment and Technology, who said the move was part of an effort to “sharpen our focus and put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities.”
While the Black Panther project is no more, EA stated it would continue development on other high-profile titles, including the Iron Man game announced in 2022, the next Star Wars: Jedi instalment, and a new entry in the Mass Effect series.

The closure of Cliffhanger Games reflects the increasing challenges in the gaming industry, where only the most profitable titles tend to survive. Despite excitement for the Black Panther game, it couldn’t make the cut under EA’s current priorities.
“These decisions are hard,” Miele wrote, acknowledging the human cost of the restructuring. “They affect people we’ve worked with, learned from, and shared real moments with. We’re doing everything we can to support them—including finding opportunities within EA, where we’ve had success helping people land in new roles.”
The end of Cliffhanger Games comes shortly after EA laid off an estimated 300–400 employees in April, and cancelled two early-stage “incubation projects,” including a new Titanfall concept.
While the Black Panther game is no longer happening, EA is still working on several big-name titles like Iron Man, the next Star Wars: Jedi installment, and new Mass Effect and Battlefield games.
