Domestic borrowing: Rs317bn added to govt’s debt in a week, SBP data shows

The government borrowed Rs317.06 billion in the week ending April 18, 2025, bringing its total borrowing for the fiscal year 2025 to Rs1.53 trillion, as reported by the State Bank of Pakistan. 

For the week in question, the government borrowed Rs311.65 billion for budgetary support, Rs8.15 billion for commodity operations, and repaid Rs2.75 billion under the “other” category. 

So far this fiscal year, the total borrowing for budgetary support has reached Rs1.83 trillion. Repayments related to commodity operations total Rs296.81 billion, while Rs1.53 billion has been repaid under other financial categories. 

The government’s primary sources of borrowing for budgetary support are the State Bank of Pakistan and scheduled commercial banks. 

Since the start of the fiscal year, the government has repaid Rs597.76 billion to the central bank. Out of this, the federal government borrowed Rs41 billion, while provincial governments paid back Rs596.78 billion. Additionally, the governments of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) repaid Rs25.14 billion and Rs16.84 billion, respectively. 

On the other hand, the government has borrowed a total of Rs2.43 trillion from scheduled banks. The federal government borrowed Rs2.62 trillion, while provincial governments repaid Rs198.02 billion.
