WEBDESK: A tragic attack on a mosque in Niger’s southwestern village of Fonbita has left 44 people dead and 13 others wounded. The attack occurred during Friday prayers and is believed to have been carried out by militants linked to the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS). Among the injured, four are in critical condition.

The attack took place in the Kokorou commune, a region near Niger’s borders with Mali and Burkina Faso. This area has seen increasing violence in recent years as extremist groups continue to target civilians and security forces. Niger’s Interior Minister, Mohamed Toumba, strongly condemned the attack, calling it a “cowardly and inhumane act.” He assured the public that authorities are intensifying efforts to combat terrorism in the region.

In response to the tragedy, the Nigerien government has declared three days of national mourning. Flags will be flown at half-mast across the country as the nation grieves the loss of innocent lives. Officials have also launched an investigation to identify and capture those responsible for the attack.

The country has been battling extremist violence for years, particularly in its western and southwestern regions. Militant groups have taken advantage of instability in neighboring Mali and Burkina Faso to carry out cross-border attacks. The government has vowed to strengthen security and protect civilians from further violence.

As Niger mourns this devastating loss, authorities remain committed to ensuring justice for the victims and enhancing security in vulnerable areas.
