In an interesting development, a Democratic US Senator, Cory Booker, broke all records for the longest speech in the US Senate history after delivering 25-hour long speech against President Donald Trump’s actions on Tuesday.
Cory Booker, a renowned Senator who belongs to the Democratic Party, showed exemplary patience and endurance by standing on his feet for more than 20 hours in the US Senate.
Interestingly, the previous longest speech in US Senate history was held by a senator from South Carolina, Strom Thurmond, who delivered a 24 hours and 18 minutes against the Civil Rights Act of 1957.
Thurmond gave the speech against a progressive bill which aimed to provide equal rights to black men and women.
Booker expressed his dissatisfaction over the fact, saying, “Strom Thurmond’s record always… really irked me that the longest speech on our great Senate floor was someone who was trying to stop people like me [African-American] from being in the Senate.”
In his speech, Cory Booker strongly criticised Trump’s policies including his plans for reducing government expenditures and giving unusual amount of control to the billionaire, Elon Musk.
“Unnecessary hardships are being borne by Americans of all backgrounds. And institutions which are special in America, which are precious and which are unique in our country, are being recklessly — and I would say even unconstitutionally — affected, attacked, even shattered.”
He warned that Trump’s policies, including Elon Musk’s role in the White House, have undermined US democracy like it never had in the past.
It must be highlighted that Cory intended to break the longest speech record as he revealed the details about how he withstood the physical demands of the speech.
“My strategy was to stop eating. I think I stopped eating Friday and then to stop drinking the night before I started on Monday,” he told reporters in the Capitol.
