WEBDESK: Chicken prices have once again gone up as Pakistan faces a fresh spike in the cost of living. According to the latest government report, inflation has drastically escalated in the week to week progression due to a hike in food, fuel, and energy rates.

The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics shows that the weekly rate of inflation increased by 4.07 per cent and hence the annual inflation index moved to 2.22 per cent. This is one of the greatest increases in recent weeks.

Among the key drivers of inflation are chicken prices, which have climbed in several cities. In Peshawar, live chicken rate increased by Rs 10 per kg making the rate at Rs 425 per kg. The chicken prices in Lahore rose by 5 rupees a kg with the current wholesale price standing at 389 and the current retail price is 403 rupees a kg.

There is also increased cost of broiler chicken meat. The meat in Lahore is going at the rate of Rs 584 per kg against Rs 577 the previous day. This increase in the prices of chicken is now hurting the households budgets particularly in the urban centers.

The live chicken price fell by Rs 36 per kg temporarily during the week, however, it is a minor relief. However, towards the close of the week, the rates increased once more, putting more pressure on consumers who were already under the ash of increased costs of tomatoes, eggs, milk, curd, lentils, and beef.

Inflation is also being driven up because of fuel costs. The prices of gas have increased to Rs 590 per MMBTU, and electricity tariffs hiked to Rs 1 per unit.

On a positive note, some essential items did become cheaper. Sugar fell by Rs 8, onions by Rs 1.76, and a 20-kg bag of flour became Rs 17 cheaper. The LPG cylinder for household use dropped by Rs 66. Other falling prices included potatoes, bananas, and pulses like moong and chana dal.

Still, for most households, the recurring increase in chicken prices and basic utilities continues to stretch monthly budgets.
