WEBDESK: Consumers all over Pakistan are struggling due to rising chicken prices. Despite a slight decrease in the cost of live broiler chickens, meat prices continue to increase sharply, making it difficult for many families to afford this essential food.

Chicken prices Surge across Pakistan

According to market reports, the farm gate rate for live broiler chickens is currently Rs365 per kilogram. The wholesale rate stands at Rs379 per kilogram, while the retail rate has reached Rs393 per kilogram. However, shopkeepers say they are receiving live chickens at Rs400 per kilogram, which is pushing the price of broiler meat up to Rs590 per kilogram in many areas.

Clean, processed chicken meat is even more expensive, with rates going as high as Rs700 per kilogram. These rising chicken prices are putting serious pressure on consumers, many of whom rely on poultry as an affordable source of daily protein.

The problem is made worse by the lack of clear price control mechanisms. Without fixed pricing for chicken, many sellers are adjusting rates based on fluctuating supply costs. This practice is creating confusion and frustration among both buyers and sellers. Many are urging the government to take immediate action to regulate chicken prices and make poultry affordable for the average household.

Egg Prices Also See an Upward Trend

In addition to rising chicken prices, egg prices have also gone up. The retail price has increased by Rs2 per dozen, now standing at Rs308 per dozen. In wholesale markets, a crate of eggs is selling for Rs9,120. Market sources say this rise is due to a drop in supply combined with growing demand.

With both chicken prices and egg rates increasing, consumers are finding it harder to manage their daily expenses. Many fear that if left unchecked, the situation could worsen. There is growing public demand for strong government intervention to bring stability and fairness to the pricing of essential food items.

Earlier Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister, took notice over the repeated price increase of chicken in the province. She has told all involved departments to act swiftly and severely to lower the prices.
