The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has allocated land to the Higher Education Commission (HEC) in I-17, Islamabad, to construct two universities.

In 2007, the CDA allotted 250 acres of land to HEC in the Kuri area to construct a university. HEC planned to establish the University of Engineering, Sciences, and Technology on this land and set aside 35 acres from the allocation for the National University of Law. However, the project faced setbacks as locals were already residing on the allotted land, leading to possession issues that prevented HEC from taking control and proceeding with construction.

CDA, in collaboration with the Defence Housing Authority (DHA), launched the Margalla Enclave Housing Project in Sector I-17. To accommodate educational institutions affected by the Kuri land issues, the CDA Board approved their relocation to I-17, officially designating the sector as an Institutional Sector for universities.

A CDA spokesperson confirmed the allocation of the land to HEC while talking to Dawn. He said that the plots designated for universities and educational institutes have been relocated following approval from the CDA Board and the federal government.

Sources in HEC said that besides said university land, the HEC had also several plots worth billions of rupees in various marakaz of Islamabad including G-11 and I-8, which are laying unused.
