Passenger car sales in Pakistan rose sharply in May despite persistently high prices, showing signs of demand recovery in the country’s struggling auto sector.

Total sales of passenger cars, light commercial vehicles (LCVs), vans, and jeeps rose 35.2 per cent year-on-year to 14,802 units, according to data released by the Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA). That compares to 10,949 units sold in May 2024.

Month-on-month, sales climbed nearly 40 per cent from 10,596 units recorded in April 2025, marking the strongest monthly performance so far this fiscal year

Between July 2024 and May 2025 (11MFY25), overall auto sales reached 126,162 units, an increase of 39.3 per cent from the 90,544 units sold during the same period a year earlier.

The bulk of May’s sales came from the ‘1300cc and above’ category, which recorded 6,778 units. Toyota models, including Corolla and Yaris, led the segment with 3,814 units sold. Honda (Civic and City) followed with 1,870 units, while Suzuki Swift and Hyundai Elantra posted sales of 792 and 180 units respectively.

The ‘below 1000cc’ segment was the second largest, recording 3,865 units. Suzuki Alto dominated this category with 3,409 units, while Suzuki Bolan also contributed to the total.

In the mid-range ‘1000cc’ category, sales were relatively modest at 476 units. Suzuki Cultus accounted for 252 units, and Suzuki WagonR followed with 224 units.

While overall demand remains well below pre-crisis levels, industry officials say easing inflation and better financing conditions have contributed to the recent uptrend.
