BYD is set to launch the Shark 6 Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) on July 25. It will be the first PHEV in Pakistan’s pickup truck segment.
The company shared this announcement at a media workshop on PHEV technology held in Karachi.
PakWheels co-founder Suneel Munj said the decision to launch a PHEV was based on poor road infrastructure and a lack of charging stations.
“The competition depends on the price of the vehicle,” he said, adding that the Shark 6 might be priced under Rs20 million.

Danish Khaliq, Vice President Sales and Strategy at BYD Pakistan, said the new model will help fill a market gap.
“Our Shark 6 PHEV will attract customers who are already well-informed about all models of the international brand BYD,” he said.
“There is a gap in the market, we think we will fill this gap in terms of not only luxury, feature perspectives but also technology one. This is the first pickup truck in PHEV.”
Khaliq gave a presentation explaining how PHEVs differ from other hybrid vehicles.
“This isn’t about incremental improvement, it’s a leap. The electric motor does the heavy lifting. The combustion engine exists to support, not lead. That distinction changes the entire driving dynamic, especially for urban users who are increasingly looking for smarter and cleaner options,” he said.
He explained that traditional hybrid vehicles rely on only the petrol engine. However, BYD’s PHEVs employ a larger battery than traditional hybrid vehicles, and these can also be charged externally.
“This allows them to offer both greater fuel efficiency and environmental benefits without compromising range. They also provide the capability to drive solely on the battery, with an extended range, operating as a pure electric vehicle.”
BYD Pakistan Country Head Lei Jian said the company had been working on dual-mode architecture for over 20 years.
“We launched the world’s first mass-produced PHEV back in 2008. With a vertically integrated supply chain and constant R&D, we’ve built a platform that’s both intelligent and efficient. The engine only activates when it’s needed, making long-distance travel stress-free.”
The Shark 6 combines a large battery with a high-efficiency Xiaoyun 1.5L engine. Jian said the engine has a thermal efficiency of 46.06%.
“BYD Shark 6 had been introduced not just as Pakistan’s first PHEV pickup but also a category-defining product.”
