ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad aurat march organisers have formally asked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to hold their annual rally on International Women’s Day. The request comes after years of repeated denials by the Islamabad administration which has led to clashes between the march participants law enforcement.

A Struggle for the Right to Assemble

Aurat March, a movement that speaks for women’s rights and gender equality, has faced obstacles in securing NOC’s for their events in recent years. The march will be held on 8th March outside Islamabad Press Club with the organisers hoping that they get their NOC by then.

The organisers argue that their constitutional right to peaceful assembly is being restricted, and they have called on the Prime Minister to ensure a fair and just approval process.

In their open letter to the Prime Minister, the organisers expressed concerns over mistreatment from religious groups, Islamabad administration and a lack of support from local authorities. They have asked the government to protect their right to protest safely and to prevent any undue interference during the event.

Past Challenges and Growing Support

Aurat March has gained significant ground over the years, with women’s rights activists, and students actively participating. However, previous marches in Islamabad have seen growing tensions, with law enforcement blocking access and dispersing crowds.

This year’s request to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is seen as a direct appeal for the government to intervene and prevent a repeat of past events. Securing an NOC will ensure a peaceful and organised rally, where participants can freely voice their demands for gender justice, workplace safety, and equal rights.

Awaiting Government Response

As the March 8 event approaches, all eyes are on the government’s response to the petition. A decision in favour of the Aurat March could signal a progressive step toward protecting women’s rights while another rejection may once again invite criticism over state restrictions on peaceful activism and protests.

With public support growing, the Aurat March Islamabad remains determined to hold its rally, regardless of the challenges ahead.
