Pakistani student Moosa Harraj, son of former federal minister Muhammad Raza Hayat Harraj, has been elected president of the Oxford Union for Michaelmas Term 2025.

He is the fourth Pakistani to hold this position after Benazir Bhutto, Ahmad Nawaz, and Israr Khan, and the first from Punjab.

Moosa Harraj secured a decisive victory against his opponent, Chris Collins, winning by 200 votes in an election that saw record turnout. He received 833 first-preference votes, one of the highest in recent years, reflecting strong support from the Union’s members.

He joined Oxford University in 2023 to pursue an MPhil in Economics at Balliol College. His academic journey began at Aitchison College, Lahore, followed by Charterhouse School in Surrey. He later attended the London School of Economics (LSE) and Harvard University for his undergraduate studies before moving to Oxford.

Moosa Harraj about this achievement

Speaking to private channel, Moosa Harraj described his win as “the pleasure of a lifetime.” He thanked Allah and expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him. He also hoped his achievement would inspire students from Pakistan and across South Asia to aim high and believe in their potential.

Harraj’s entire team, “Bridge,” also secured key officer positions. Katherine Yang was elected Librarian-elect, Pakistani student Raza Nazar won as Treasurer-elect, and Jennifer Yang became Secretary.
