WEBDESK (Azaad English): Microsoft has announced that it will terminate the operation of Skype starting on May 5 thus ending the twenty-year existence of the famous communication application. Microsoft Teams has become the main platform of interest for the company since it experienced significant growth during the past few years.

Skype and Teams:

During 2003 the launch of Skype enabled users to make free voice and video calls through its platform. Over time the platform fell behind the current standards which Zoom and Slack represent. Following its $8.5 billion acquisition by Microsoft in 2011 the company attempted to merge its functions into its existing platform without finding equivalent success.

Microsoft launched Teams in 2017 as its new business-oriented communication solution. The company focused on Teams as its core project because of its complete integration into Windows 11 and Office applications. The user base for Teams has exceeded 320 million monthly active users at present whereas Skype maintains 23 million active users.

Microsoft has joined the list of Microsoft product companies that cut popular services from their portfolio by discontinuing this app.

Earlier this month an editing app Canva that is easily available on Microsoft platforms faced an outage, leaving users frustrated. This issue was acknowledged by the company and was resolved.
