WEBDESK: The Indian military is facing a growing mental health crisis, with a sharp rise in suicides among its soldiers. Experts say the root cause is the increasing pressure and stress under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s aggressive military posture.
A recent case has once again exposed the dire state of Indian soldiers’ mental well-being. An officer of the Chhattisgarh Armed Force took his own life by shooting himself with a government-issued rifle. The incident occurred on Sunday night at the Bayanar Camp in the Kondagaon district.
According to The Tribune India, the officer, identified as Dinesh Singh Chandel, was found dead in his room after the sound of a gunshot alerted his colleagues. A police investigation is underway, but early reports confirm it as a suicide.
This is not an isolated incident. Between 2019 and June 2025, a shocking 177 Indian security personnel have committed suicide in Chhattisgarh alone, according to The Tribune India (Indian media outlet).
The Indian government has failed to address this growing crisis. Soldiers are being used as tools in Modi’s war-driven policies, with little regard for their psychological well-being. Surrounded by weapons and consumed by conflict, these soldiers are being pushed beyond their mental limits.
Despite international concern and ridicule over its handling of internal and external military affairs, the Modi regime remains silent. The obsession with power and war is destroying the very men tasked with protecting the nation.
India’s military image is weakening. The morale of its soldiers is collapsing. And the rising suicide rate is a grim reflection of a force stretched thin under an extremist government.
