An Indian court has sentenced a prominent politician, Prajwal Revanna, after he was found guilty of raping one of his 47-year-old domestic staff.
Earlier, his videos featuring him started circulating on social media, causing outrage across the country.
Prajwal Revanna had denied the charges. Moreover, he pleaded for a lesser punishment when he was found guilty.
It is pertinent to mention that Revanna is a grandson of former Indian Prime Minister, H D Deve Gowda, whose Janata Dal (Secular) party is allied with current Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP.
Revanna left India in April 2024 using his diplomatic passport after hundreds of videos of abuse began circulating in his state.
He was arrested a month later after arriving back home from Germany.

Prajwal’s life will mirror that of any other life convict. He will wear a white prison uniform, follow strict jail routines, and perform eight hours of mandatory labour daily. Prison officials confirmed that he will be treated like any other inmate, in accordance with the Karnataka Prison Manual.
According to Indian reports, he now has to select one among several assigned duties and options include work in the jail bakery, gardening, dairy, vegetable farming, carpentry, or handicrafts.
For now, he will receive Rs 524 per month for unskilled labor. Depending on performance and skill development, his classification and pay could be upgraded to semi-skilled or skilled categories over time.
