Following the troubling news of raids on a donkey meat slaughterhouse in Tarnol, Islamabad, Minister of National Assembly (MNA) Syed Ayaz Shirazi raised concerns about the development in the Standing Committee on Food Security.
“Do we go to the hotels to eat donkey meat? This issue is grave and a national concern,” said MNA Syed Ayaz Shirazi in the standing committee.
“Our job is to look after the food policy at the national level. We give licenses to export meat, but it is the job of the district administration to look after matters at the local level,” replied the official Secretary from National Food Security.
Previously, around 1,000kg of donkey meat was recovered by the Islamabad Food Authority.
The authority conducted a raid in the small town of Islamabad, Tarnol. According to reports, the donkey meat was supposed to be supplied abroad.
The meat is now being disposed of by the Islamabad Food Authority. The department’s director has started looking into this matter. A foreign national person was also arrested as he was present at the scene.
In a separate incident, authorities have arrested two people in the Kuza Banda area of Battagram District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) over slaughtering and selling donkey meat.
According to Battagram police, samples of the recovered meat have been sent to a laboratory for analysis.
The accused maintain that the donkey meat was intended to be sent to foreign camps.
