The United States may impose tariffs between 20% and 25% on Indian exports.
Trade talks between the two countries are still ongoing. No final agreement has been reached.
Reuters reported that India is preparing for higher US tariffs. Bloomberg quoted Trump responding to the report:
“Yes, I think so,” he said when asked if India would face 20–25% tariffs.
When asked if the trade deal with India was finalised, Trump replied: “No, it’s not.”
Speaking to reporters on Air Force One, Trump said India is a “good friend,” but also said it charges more tariffs than any other country.
Trump also said that countries which do not reach separate trade deals with the US could face tariffs of 15% to 20%.
These new rates would be higher than the 10% tariff announced in April.
He said his administration will inform around 200 countries about the new “world tariff” rate soon.
While talking to reporters, Donald Trump once again claimed credit for stopping the war between India and Pakistan.
Rahul Gandhi, today, condemned the Prime Minister of India for lying to the public, saying, “Donald Trump has said 29 times that he got the ceasefire. If Trump is lying, PM Modi should openly say he is a liar. Come here and say it in the parliament that Trump is lying.”
Modi during his address deliberately skipped naming Trump while falsely claiming that “No world leader had asked us to stop [attacking Pakistan].”
