WEBDESK: Under Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, India has become a hostile place for minorities now targetting Bengali Muslim. Rising religious bias and ethnic discrimination now define official policy.
According to Indian news outlet The Wire, the Modi regime is actively targeting Bengali Muslim migrants for speaking Bengali. Despite having valid identification and Indian passports, these Muslims are being labelled as “foreigners” and detained without proper legal basis.
Recently, 74 Bengali speaking Muslim migrant workers were arrested in Haryana. The Home Ministry ordered the arrests, The Wire reported. Most of the detained 63 are from Assam, while 11 belong to West Bengal.
The report says the arrests happened without any clear legal process. Rights groups have called this a violation of basic human rights.
One woman detained told Indian news outlet The Wire, “We are being targeted just because we speak Bengali.”
Legal experts quoted by The Wire confirmed that detaining citizens without cause or access to legal counsel is against the Indian Constitution. However, under Modi’s Home Ministry, police can declare anyone a “suspect” and keep them in detention for up to 30 days without needing strong evidence.
The Home Ministry has also instructed state governments to build detention centres at the district level. Over 200 people are already being held in inhumane conditions in a facility in Haryana, the Indian media reports.
Human rights defenders say these so-called “holding centres” are actually full scale detention camps. They warn this is part of a wider effort to implement a nationwide crackdown similar to the NRC (National Register of Citizens) in Assam.
Legal activists claim that every arrested individual in this latest wave is a Bengali-speaking Muslim. BJP leaders are using the term “illegal immigrants” as a weapon against Muslims, turning citizenship into a tool of exclusion.
Lawyer Sinha, quoted in the report, stated that police now have sweeping powers to detain Muslims purely on suspicion.
This alarming trend under the Modi government spews out only one message: demanding Muslims through unjust arrests and colouring them being barred by language/we language and religion.
