M-Tag made mandatory for all vehicles entering Islamabad; decision to Install parking meters also taken

Webdesk: Capital Development Authority (CDA) has now made the installation of M-Tag in vehicles entering the capital, Islamabad, compulsory to ease the congestion by making a digital toll and digital parking system. Unregistered vehicles that do not have an M-Tag will not be allowed in the federal capital.

This decision was made at a meeting chaired by CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa. The authority declared that a new system that will be totally digital for parking will be implemented in the city, with parking meters placed in special zones. Charges for parking will be steeper in congested spots so as to reduce vehicle numbers.

The chairman, Randhawa, said a review will be made daily to check how many vehicles have entered and left the city. An online and mobile application is also being developed so that it can be used to enable people to pay parking fees without using cash. The citizens will be in a position to pay parking fees via a mobile application or a QR code.

As a requirement of the Motorway Authority, the M-Tag is a windshield sticker that has a special bar-code that is coupled with the toll payment system. When a tagged car will go near a toll plaza, the toll gate will open automatically, and the money is charged to the user’s account. Cars that have no M-Tag are supposed to pay the tolls manually by cash.

One Network owns and operates the M-Tag system with office locations on many of the toll plazas along motorways. Vehicle owners have to submit a vehicle registration card, a copy of their CNIC and a mobile number to get an M-Tag sticker.

Those are the new steps in Islamabad, trying to become a completely digital traffic and parking environment, minimise congestion and improve the urban mobility situation.
