Webdesk: The Islamabad Excise and Taxation Department have embarked on a detailed fancy number plate crackdown whereby efforts are being intensified to see that all vehicles use standard registration plates.
Under the instructions of Director General Irfan Memon, immediate and prompt action is to be taken against the violators of the use of unauthorised or decorative number plates.
In the context of the fancy number plate crackdown, there has been the deployment of inspection teams in all areas of Islamabad to penalise and monitor non-compliant vehicles.
They are supposed to come up with different teams that would search and impound vehicles bearing non-standard plates, such as those with stylised fonts, personal names, logos, and even format changes contrary to the official Excise Department design.
DG Irfan Memon made it clear that the fancy number plate crackdown is very important because the plates can only be genuine in the case of Excise numbers. Cars with illegal number plates shall be hit with heavy penalties, including compulsory imprisonment on the scene, he said.
The goal of the operation will be to enhance the aspects of uniformity, security, and ease of identifying vehicles in the event of a traffic check and carrying out surveillance.
The law enforcers in the fancy number plate crackdown have noted that the majority of motorists are using fancy or customised number plates, which are against the law, besides hampering the course of action against offenders.
These plates normally confuse the officials when they want to dispatch knowledge about the vehicle, which exposes them to danger during investigations or security checks in the federal capital.
Checkpoints are already being mounted in major roads, business centres and residential units in order to have success in the crackdown on the fancy number plates. The money obtained will be taken as a hefty amount of fine, and repeated crimes can result in subsequent legal actions.
Officials said the crackdown will go on in the next days with no exception being granted.
This is in addition to the fanciful number plate crackdown that is being carried out with a sensitisation program of the populace as well. This is being reminded to the citizens using various media channels so that they have to replace the fancy ones with the approved standard ones so as to evade fines and impoundment. DG Memon urged all vehicle owners to do it on voluntary basis so that they can be punished.
The Islamabad Excise Department has once again urged to keep discipline on registration of vehicles, which is both related to the safety of the population as well as uniformity on the legal front. The current crackdown on fancy number plates is a big move in that direction and is making the practices on the roads legal throughout the capital.
