Sindh and Balochistan have agreed to work together to improve livestock farming by exchanging top quality breeds and launching joint research.
The decision was made during a meeting between Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and Balochistan Livestock Minister Sardarzada Mir Faisal Jamali in Karachi.
Focus on livestock, women’s welfare, and investment
As part of the plan, a cattle show will be held in Jacobabad, where animals like Sindh’s Thari cattle, Red Sindhi, Kundi buffalo, and Balochistan’s Rakhli cattle, Bhagani bulls, and Kuchi camels will be showcased. The chief minister said he will personally attend and invite officials from Balochistan.
Shah also called for joint research between both provinces to help farmers and promote local breeds.
Pakistan Livestock Sector: Country Profile
Livestock is the backbone of Pakistan’s rural economy. It contributes about 63.6 % of agriculture’s value added and 14.97 % of national GDP, after growing 4.7 % in FY 2025.
More than eight million rural families rely on cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats, camels and poultry for daily income, food security and employment, making the sector a key driver of poverty reduction and economic stability.
The national herd continues to expand. Latest Economic Survey estimates list 57.5 million cattle, 46.3 million buffalo, 32.7 million sheep, 87 million goats and 1.2 million camels, alongside 2 billion poultry birds. Annual gross milk output now tops 70 billion litres, while total meat production has risen to 5.8 million tonnes, reflecting steady gains in dairy and poultry.
Well known indigenous breeds include Red Sindhi and Thari cattle, Kundi buffalo, Nali sheep and Kamori goats, prized for their hardiness and milk yield.
Livestock earnings account for nearly 3 % of Pakistan’s exports, mainly through halal meat, hides and dairy products.
To unlock further potential, government policy focuses on breed improvement, disease free zones, modern slaughterhouses and export meat processing hubs, while tackling challenges such as fodder shortages, climate stress and trans‑boundary animal diseases.
With targeted investment and better veterinary services, the sector is expected to remain a cornerstone of growth, food security and rural livelihoods.
