Webdesk: Widespread rain, wind, and thunderstorms are expected across Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Kashmir. Scattered showers are also likely in parts of northeast and south Balochistan, southeast and upper Sindh, as well as Gilgit-Baltistan. According to the daily Pakistan weather update, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely today in several parts of Punjab, Islamabad, upper KP, Kashmir, and northeast Balochistan.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned that from tonight through 17th July, intense rainfall may cause flash floods in local streams and nullahs across D.G. Khan, northeast and upper Punjab, northeast Balochistan, Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Kashmir, and various hilly areas of KP including Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Mansehra, Murree, Galliyat, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Buner, Swabi, Nowshera and Mardan.
There is also a risk of landslides or mudslides in the vulnerable mountainous areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Murree, Galliyat, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, which may result in road blockages.
Urban flooding is likely in low-lying areas of Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Multan, Khanewal, Sahiwal, Lodhran, Muzaffargarh, Kot Addu, Taunsa, Rajanpur, Bahawalpur, Nowshera, Peshawar, and Islamabad/Rawalpindi. Authorities have urged people to remain alert.
Strong winds can damage fragile structures, including electric poles, trees, vehicles, solar panels, and even standing crops.
The current weather pattern, that can be noticed in the Pakistan weather update, is being driven by a well-marked low-pressure area (LPA) lying over north Rajasthan in India. This system is affecting eastern Punjab in Pakistan.
Under its influence, strong monsoon currents are expected to move into the central and upper regions of the country over the next 24 to 36 hours. A westerly wave is also present over the upper areas of Pakistan.
