Webdesk: The Maharashtra Public Security Bill is being widely viewed as a clear expression of the Modi government’s fascist mindset, aimed at crushing voices that dare to disagree with the government.
According to Deccan Chronicle, the bill allows the government to declare any organisation illegal without a judicial trial. It includes vague terms like “urban Naxalism” and “public disorder,” which can easily be used against any critical or protest group.
Deccan Chronicle further reports that opposition parties have called the bill a tool for political revenge.
As per The Times of India, under this bill, the government would have the power to seal the offices of such organisations, freeze their funds, and detain their members without the option of bail.
According to international news channel Al Jazeera, over 24,000 individuals have already been arrested by the Modi government under draconian laws such as UAPA. One of the most apparent instances of this repression is seen in the banning of the Popular Front of India (PFI) absence of any due judicial process.
Al Jazeera also stated that out of 1,165 recorded hate speech incidents, 98 per cent were targeted against Indian Muslims.
Under Modi’s leadership, freedom of expression has been increasingly suppressed, raids were carried out on the BBC and other organisations, and Muslim-owned properties have been bulldozed under the claim of being “illegal,” all forming part of the so-called Bulldozer Raj.
The Modi government has been labelling students, journalists, and human rights activists as rebels in order to silence them. All of these policies seem to serve one purpose: promoting the Hindutva ideology.
The Maharashtra Special Public Security Act is not about security. It’s about silence.

Now, anyone can be branded an “urban Naxal.” No definitions, no safeguards, just labels. Protest too loudly? You’re a threat. Write too freely? You’re a conspirator.

Laws like the Maharashtra Public Security Bill have pushed civil liberties, equality, and justice into being just words in the Constitution. This bill is a direct attack on public freedom and part of Modi’s wider plan to weaken Indian democracy.
