Iran has rejected accusations from Israel and the United States that it is on the verge of developing a nuclear weapon, with its Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reaffirming that the country has “never sought and will never seek” such arms.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Araghchi questioned why, if Iran truly intended to pursue nuclear weapons, it would not have done so in response to current hostilities. “If otherwise, what better pretext could we possibly need for developing those inhuman weapons than the current aggression by the region’s only nuclear-armed regime?” he wrote.

He maintained that Tehran’s actions are purely defensive in nature, describing them as a response to “the most outrageous aggression” being carried out against the country.

Araghchi further cautioned that the international community should be “highly alarmed” by what he called Israel’s efforts to widen the conflict in the region.

“With the exception of the illegitimate, genocidal and occupying Israeli regime, we remain committed to diplomacy,” the foreign minister stated, adding that Iran maintains a “serious and forward-looking” approach in its regional and international engagements.
