WEBDESK: A Karachi court, on Tuesday, has approved a two-day physical remand for businessman Salman Farooqi in connection with an assault case that has sparked public outrage across Pakistan.
The incident, which took place in Karachi’s upscale Defence Housing Authority (DHA) area, involved a violent altercation where Salman Farooqi was seen physically attacking a motorcyclist. The victim was accompanied by his sister at the time.
The confrontation was caught on camera and quickly spread across social media platforms, drawing widespread criticism and calls for accountability. In the video, Salman Farooqi is allegedly seen harassing and assaulting the young man, which has been described by many as a display of unchecked power and privilege.
Following the incident, the victims – Dheeraj and his sister Kalpana – were reportedly forced to leave their residence due to safety concerns. Their legal representative and supporters have urged authorities to provide them with protection. Police have been attempting to contact Dheeraj and Kalpana to investigate the matter, but their whereabouts are unknown.
Gizri police presented both accused, including Salman Farooqi, before a city court.
Farooqi, through his lawyer Naeem Qureshi, filed a bail application, arguing that the sections regarding issuing threats are bailable.
However, the investigation officer (IO) requested the court to grant physical remand for further interrogation.
However, the judge decided to send both Salman Farooqi and his co-accused on a two-day physical remand. This remand allows law enforcement additional time to investigate the circumstances surrounding the case and collect evidence.
Salman Farooqi was booked in the case, registered at Gizri Police Station, on the charges of issuing death threats, assault and public humiliation at the complaint of the eyewitness, Muhammad Saleem.
